The songs I listened to most in 2016

Time has come for me to reveal the inner aural workings of my mind. If you saw me on the train or walking through Cabramatta with my headphones on, chances are I was listening to one of these tunes. Does it make you think differently of me? 1. We've Got the Right by Boy George - For some reason I got all late 80s gay radical this year and spent a lot of time (well, 80 times to be exact) listening to Boy George 's little-known paean to gay love from 1986. It is a lovely song, don't you think? 2. Restart by Sam Smith - More Queer longing. I have whittled the Sam Smith album down to just this song, and that's cos it's filled with all kinds of 1980s dance-ey fabulousness. 3. Claire Scobie launches her first novel

Gleebooks, Sydney Noted travel writer, reviewer and journalist Claire Scobie has made the great writing leap and published her first novel, The Pagoda Tree . I was there for the launch on Friday night at a very crowded (and very warm) upstairs at Gleebooks. It was, of course, a star-studded audience which included critically acclaimed novelist Gail Jones , ex-Senator Aden Ridgeway (aka Mr. Claire Scobie ), and writers Belinda Castles and Felicity Castagna (the second time this week I have bumped into the delightful Ms. Castagna). I came to know Claire through studying with her at the Writing & Society Research Centre at the University of Western Sydney , which is where this fascinating novel was born. Why authors should still blog

I regularly teach creative writing classes and am regularly asked questions about how to succeed as an author, or how to promote a book once it's written and published.And though there are constant changes in platforms and technology I am still giving the same answer after all these years. Number one in importance is: Blogging! I do get pushback (a lot of pushback!). Blogging is dead, people say. We have moved on to other platforms: Instagram, TikTok. And while I agree that it is very important to use whatever social platforms you can manage, the good old-fashioned blog is still of immense importance. It's like your own little patch of earth that will always be there, regardless of the changes that happen in social media. Anyone remember Google+ ? I understand that many established authors are not interested in blogging, or don't have the time. But for any new writer (particularly one who is not yet published!) blogging is still absolutely essential. If you have...
