This year the Lunar New Year celebrations being organised by the City of Sydney are really impressive - they have a whole programme of cultural activities of genuine interest, and I am looking forward to taking part in them.
The highlights are probably the tours of the various Chinese temples around Sydney. Most interesting to me is the tour of the Evergreen Taoist Church in Redfern. I've known about this Temple (I wonder why they have insisted on calling it a church?) for some time - some friends used to live just across from it - but have never visited.
Taoism is a religion that fascinates me. For many years I was a student of the Tao Te Ching, the text on which the religion was founded. Though it is one of the most translated texts in the English language it still remains largely impenetrable. Its wilfully obscure little poems can be (and are) called upon to support just about any sort of worldview - most recently we've seen self-help gurus like Wayne Dyer and Byron Katie drawing upon the antique wisdom of this classic. And while the text is mystical and intellectually baffling, the popular religion of Taoism has become synonymous in the Chinese world with magic, mystery and wizardry, along with a healthy dose of peculiar sexual instruction.
The Taoist immortals who are worshipped are a motley lot, and include an itinerant tranny and a drunk.
Popular organised Taoism as a lived religion is still pretty much a mystery to me, and I very much look forward to learning more on the open day.
